Because pearls are one of the absolute classics of the jewellery world. Whether pearl jewellery in gold or silver, necklaces, bracelets, rings or earrings: pearls never go out of fashion and are a sign of style consciousness and timeless fashion affinity.

Sustainable cultivation of freshwater pearls

Genuine pearl jewelry - does it even exist in sustainable? At fejn, the answer is clearly yes! Because the freshwater pearls we use to make our sustainable, genuine pearl jewelry come exclusively from ecologically managed farms. The farms attach great importance to the fish population and regulate the shellfish farming. As true gifts of nature, pearls only grow when their environment is healthy and as untouched as possible.

Pearls always work and are beautiful to fall in love with

The magazine freundin agrees and has awarded our pearl necklace with the Perfect Piece Award 2022. And we can't blame them, because this pearl necklace in gold or silver is always a good choice! The shimmering freshwater pearls with a silver or gold-colored detail and matching clasp make the necklace a delicate eye-catcher. It is adjustable in length and can therefore be perfectly combined with other fejn necklaces.

If you prefer a more subtle pearl look, a combination of pearls and precious metal elements, for example in the form of a delicate pearl bracelet in gold or silver, is ideal: Our single pearl bracelet combines a delicate chain bracelet with a single, delicate freshwater pearl. The delicate band works perfectly as a stand-alone piece of luxury pearl jewelry or in combination with other fejn bracelets. For a glamorous appearance with subtle pearl power as a necklace.

Pearl necklace, pearl bracelet or pearl earrings – sustainable, timeless

Are you looking to buy real pearl jewellery online that will complete any outfit and accompany you stylishly on every occasion? Then fejn has exactly the right pieces for you!

Discover, for example, our gemstone hoop, which makes childhood jewellery dreams a stylish reality: The subtle hoop earrings in gold or silver with two freshwater pearls are an understated eye-catcher that perfectly combines elegance and minimalism. With its restrained yet special look, this real pearl jewellery is perfect for all occasions – whether for everyday wear or a date night. Combined with our single pearl bracelet or pearl necklace, it also looks even more elegant.

Genuine pearl jewelry for special occasions – such as a wedding

Perhaps you've heard the saying: If the bride wears pearl jewelry to her wedding, it brings bad luck! Each pearl is said to symbolize a tear shed during the marriage. In this country, this superstition persists to this day. However, in an international comparison, Germans are quite alone with this belief – because in other countries, jewelry with pearls predicts something positive for the bride. In India, for example, pearls symbolize a rich blessing of children. Brides should therefore wear a particularly large number of pearls. If a bride in Greece receives pearl jewelry as a gift, it has a positive influence on the marriage.

Brides who are not prone to superstition and prefer to believe the positive attributions of other countries can therefore adorn themselves with these treasures from the deep sea on their wedding day with peace of mind. Because let's face it: shiny white pearls always look fabulous with a wedding dress.

Proper Care for Real Pearl Jewelry

For pearls used in jewelry to shine for as long as possible, these aquatic treasures should be properly cared for. Proper pearl care begins with storage. There are several things to consider when storing pearl treasures: Since these ocean jewels scratch easily, jewelry such as a pure pearl bracelet or a pearl ring should ideally be stored separately. Other precious metals can leave unsightly marks on the pearl's surface. A jewelry case, for example, is suitable for storing various pearl pieces separately.

Did you know that pearls consist of calcium carbonate and conchiolin? This protein is the main component of the outer skin of mollusks like mussels. This is why pearls cannot tolerate strong heat. It makes the pearl surface brittle and dull. Therefore, strong sunlight or other heat sources should absolutely be avoided when wearing pearls. Be careful with housework: Because pearls are natural products, acids or lyes contained in household cleaning products can damage them. So here too: when wearing pearls, keep your hands away from the cleaning bucket!

But it's not just cleaning agents that can attack the pearl surface: human sweat can too. You should therefore gently clean your pearl jewelry with silver or gold with a damp cloth to remove sweat and cosmetics after every wear. Particularly interesting: Even though pearls come from the depths of the world's waters, they do not want to return to the water after their "harvest." If the piece of jewelry does get wet, simply lay it out at room temperature to dry on a soft surface. This way, genuine pearl jewelry will remain radiant for a long time. By the way: The pearl's sheen is called "luster" and is the main criterion for determining jewelry quality. The more uniform and shiny the surface of the pearl appears, the better.

Pearl jewelry - a long tradition

The history of pearl jewelry goes back a long way: in the United Arab Emirates, teams of researchers have found pearl jewelry dating back to 5547 and 5235 BC. There are even myths surrounding Cleopatra: she is said to have dissolved a large pearl in vinegar and drunk the mixture. Throughout antiquity and also among the Greeks and Romans, pearl jewelry was highly prized. The most famous pearl "La Peregrina" was discovered in the 16th century on the Pacific coast of Panama and is still admired for its extraordinary beauty. Symbolically, the pearl is often associated with purity and virginity. In many cultures around the world, the pearl is also attributed a deeper meaning: in China, for example, it is considered a sign of dignity, wisdom and wealth. In Japan, pearl jewelry stands for good luck, and in India it symbolizes the abundance of children.

But what about the pearl's significance and popularity today? While pearl necklaces or a pearl bracelet do not make men particularly happy in most cases, the treasure from the water is still popular in the ladies' world. A timeless pearl bracelet? Ladies of the world love it! But when thinking about the jewelry, images of clunky giant pearl necklaces and exaggerated pearl hangings not infrequently flash through the minds of modern urbanistas. So it's all the better that current trend developments have replaced the pompous pearl jewelry popular in the past with timeless, more delicate models.

But what makes pearl jewelry modern - forever? The answer lies primarily in the filigree and the mix of materials. Pearl jewelry, like that from fejn, combines precious metals like gold and silver with pearl elements and focuses on clean, simple design. The result is pearl jewelry that is suitable for everyday wear and perfectly underscores the style of true urban heroines. So it's definitely not too late to buy pearl jewelry!

Jewels from nature - how are pearls formed?

As a natural product, pearls originate from mussels that live in the sea or freshwater. How exactly they form in nature is a question that science has not yet been able to fully answer. Earlier theories assumed that a pearl only forms when a foreign object (like a grain of sand or a parasite) penetrates the inside of the mussel. It was therefore assumed that the mussel forms the pearl as a defense mechanism. In this assumption, pearl formation serves to get rid of foreign objects and avert potential danger.

This natural mechanism is still used today in pearl farming: Small foreign objects are deliberately introduced into the mussel to stimulate pearl production. This works in both saltwater and freshwater, as pearl-forming mussels are found in both types of water.

Experts now assume that in natural pearl formation, the epithelial cells of the mussel are responsible for production when they are displaced into the deeper tissue of the mussel by parasites or other injuries. However, this theory has not been proven either. But what is absolutely certain: real pearl jewelry completes every look and can always be worn!
