Is my diamond really genuine? Everything you need to know about IGI certificates

Have you ever wondered how you can be sure that the sparkling diamond or stunning piece of jewelry you are purchasing is really what it says it is? This is where the IGI certificate comes into play - your ultimate proof of trust in the world of gems and jewels!

Since the launch of the eternal engagement ring at fejn jewelry, we have been stocking a diamond that has an IGI certificate. With us, every diamond from 0.5 carats in our jewelry receives such an IGI certificate. But what is it and why is it important?

What exactly is an IGI certificate?

It's basically a passport to your precious treasures. The IGI certificate is issued by the International Gemological Institute, a respected institution that specializes in testing gemstones and jewelry through their paces.

You always receive such a certificate when a gemstone or piece of jewelry has been examined by the gemologists and jewelers at IGI. They examine every aspect, from carat and color to clarity and cut. So you can be sure that the certificate contains a well-founded assessment of your piece of jewelry.

Why is the IGI certificate so important?

Imagine investing in a beautiful piece of diamond jewelry and then having doubts about whether it is really real or whether the quality is right. If the diamond used is of a certain size, it is of course nice to have security with such an investment. The IGI certificate gives you the security that you have invested in something valuable. It is your guarantee of authenticity and quality.

What is special about an IGI certificate?

Aside from giving you peace of mind that you are getting a high quality piece, it is also recognized worldwide. The International Gemological Institute has made a name for itself and is respected by experts around the world. So if you're looking for the best of the best, an IGI certificate is definitely your compass in the world of gems and jewels!

The 4 C's as the most important characteristics

The four Cs - Carat, Color, Clarity and Cut - are the most important characteristics noted in the IGI certificate. These four Cs are the linchpin in evaluating diamonds and play a critical role in their quality and value.

Carat:

This refers to the weight of the diamond and is usually specified to the nearest two decimal places. One carat is approximately 0.2 grams. However, one cannot say that a heavy diamond is directly valuable. The value only increases when the other quality characteristics are also met.

Color:

The color of a diamond ranges from colorless to various shades of yellow or brown. Diamonds with less color are considered more valuable, with diamonds in the D to Z color spectrum being graded. D stands for the highest color level and Z for the lowest. A “classic white” diamond is in the DH color grade.

Clarity:

The clarity of a diamond refers to the absence of inclusions and impurities inside or on the surface of the stone. Too many or larger inclusions can affect the brilliant brilliance of the diamond and are therefore not very welcome. Diamonds with fewer inclusions are rarer and therefore more valuable.

Flawless diamonds are therefore very valuable and only receive this rating when inclusions cannot be discovered even under tenfold magnification.

Cut:

Cut refers to the proportions, symmetry and shine of a diamond. For some, it is the most important quality feature because a good cut can reflect light efficiently and make the diamond sparkle, while a poor cut can reduce the diamond's appearance and value.

These four Cs form the basis for evaluating a diamond's quality and are carefully analyzed and evaluated by IGI's experts to ensure you know exactly what you are getting when you purchase an IGI certified diamond jewelry piece.
